“One fact that people do not understand is that artificial sweeteners actual increase the desire for sweets, deaden taste buds and induce insulin resistance, which is a large step towards diabetes,” began Barbara Griffin, NMD, CNC, Certified Gluten Practitioner, and owner of New Vitality Health Foods, Inc.
“Aspartame causes additional problems because of its chemical breakdown. A molecule of aspartame consists of two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic acid, that are linked by a molecule of methanol, the alcohol found in antifreeze. This is a very potent metabolic poison,” add Dr. Griffin.
More alarming is that aspartame can disrupt brain neurotransmitters causing depression, seizures, and memory, learning and concentration problems. Aspartame has also been linked to neurotransmitter disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Studies link the consumption of diets high in processed foods and sugar by responding with increased insulin production. In turn, the insulin produces a hormone called leptin which is a hormone that controls appetite. When too much leptin in being produced, it tricks the body into thinking it is not full resulting in overeating.
So the question arises what sugar substitute is best? Diana Sourek, MS, CNC, Certified Gluten Practitioner, and manager of New Vitality Health Foods, Inc. who just celebrated their 25th anniversary shared, “In order to avoid being overweight and prevent the onset of metabolic diseases, it is beneficial to monitor your processed and sugary food intake. Typically we recommend that our clients avoid artificial sweeteners that contain aspartame and use natural sugar substitutes. Natural sweeteners provide the sweet sensation, and are often even sweeter than sugar itself.”
New Vitality Health Foods, Inc. provides a list of natural sugar substitutes. These products can be found at the store or by shopping on-line at http://www.newvitalityhealthfoods.org.
Stevia: Extract made from the leaves of the Stevia. Stevia is a safe, natural alternative and available in different flavors (gluten-free).

Lo Han: Lo Han is the fruit of Momordica grosvenorli. Mogrosides, which are water extracted from the Lo Han fruit, offer a pleasant taste, without affecting blood sugar. It is suited for cooking and baking.
Agave: Agave has about 60 calories per tablespoon, compared to 40 calories for the same amount of table sugar. But because agave is about 1 1/2 times sweeter than sugar, you can use less of it.
Coconut sugar: Coconut sugar is classified as a low glycemic index food. Coconut sugar has a high mineral content, being a rich source of potassium, magnesium, zinc, and iron.
Turbinado sugar: Turbinado sugar is a sugar cane-based, minimally refined sugar. Many people consider it to be healthier than both white and brown sugars, since it is generally less processed and refined.
Beet Sugar: Beet Sugar is the refined extract of sugar beets and is 99.9% sucrose, making it an ideal substitute for cane sugar in most recipes. Persons with intolerance to refined cane sugar will find beet sugar to be a worthy replacement.
Stevia: Stevia is used as a non-caloric sweetener and flavor enhancer. 100% natural with zero calories, Stevia Extract In The Raw is heat stable for normal cooking and baking and of course, a great sweetener for your coffee and tea.
