One client we worked for produces high-end commercial furniture. They have standard products, but more interesting is their custom work. They have found a niche market in custom designed furniture for auditorium seating. Their products compete very successfully in the world market with 50% of their sales coming from the United States – including sales to NASA, the U.S. defense department, and major universities. They are improving their production process, upgrading their equipment, training their staff, and gearing up for a stronger push into the U.S. market.

In another case, we provided consulting services to an environmental instrument manufacturer near Toronto. They make very technical instruments which test air and liquids for various substances and elements. This company was winning huge sales from Brazil, the United States, and even exporting to China. Again this was due to their focus on value-added custom work. They build some standard products – but the real focus of the company was on providing custom solutions which meet the customers’ unique needs.
