(PRWEB) November 14, 2013
The Wall Street Journal reported that Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority Officer Thomas Choi was struck by a driver crossing the Verrazano Bridge Sunday morning as Mr. Choi was removing orange barrels that had been in place to block off traffic to allow for overnight work (Bridge officer critically injured after Verrazano accident, October 21, 2013).
According to the report, around 8 a.m. a female motorist from New Jersey struck Mr. Choi with her vehicle. Mr. Choi apparently crashed into the vehicle’s windshield and then fell to the ground. Mr. Choi was listed in critical but stable condition but no further details about his road to recovery were given. Officials stated that there were electronic message signs and lights that warned drivers of the construction, but they did not offer any speculation as to what was the direct cause of the accident.
“While we all should wait for more facts to reach any conclusions in this particular accident, hopefully people will learn from this tragedy how dangerous a job it is to do construction work on a bridge and will exercise greater caution when driving through a work site,” said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. “Even when safety measures are taken, there is always the risk of an accident when a worker is so close to the flow of traffic, as this instance painfully shows.”
“For people who are in on the job accidents like Mr. Choi, it is important to know that New York law offers expansive protections for work related injuries. When someone is injured on the job, they usually have a claim to recover for wages lost due to the injury and to cover their medical expenses. In an accident such as the one in which Mr. Choi was involved, there may be other claims based on who is determined to be at fault and whether or not all required safety measures had been in place. Anyone in Mr. Choi’s situation would be wise to consult with an experienced attorney who can monitor and gather the facts as they arise and start assessing the situation fully. The right attorney can ensure that all claims are filed in a timely and accurate manner and help an accident victim receive the maximum compensation possible,” said Munawar.
