The Ivy Family Office Network hosted its 2014 Family Office Outlook Forum in Boston, MA on October 29th with a discussion on “The 2014 Family Office Outlook” led by Henley Smith. Mr. Smith is the Chief Investment Officer of Commonwealth Asset Management, LLC.
According to Mr. Smith, “We see many challenges and market trends emerging in 2014, as a direct result of economic and market uncertainty. These range from current elevated levels of cash and its proper allocation and timely deployment back in to the market, to a growing need to satisfy a newly emerging demand of families targeting impact investing.
But, one trend we see that is firmly taking hold is the desire for families to participate in direct investments outside of traditional market vehicles. We see a need for greater control and transparency, dissatisfaction with current fund returns and pricing, and the demand to have a more targeted and customized investment experience that families have not been able to achieve in the past. ”
Moreover, “Though, traditional multifamily office (MFO) organizations continue to look to expand their direct investment participation and portfolios, many MFO’s continue to be squarely focused only on non-investment issues.
As a result, Wall Street has identified the family office market as a growth target, so we anticipate more product offerings and possible solutions from that product portal, not to mention legal and accounting firms that remain in the mix. However, we believe that participating in smaller, targeted family office events as a good first step. We believe that the formation of strategic partnerships that serve this growing sector will only continue to pick up steam. Families will look to identify those service providers and trusted advisors that bring value, through the delivery of a consortium of thought and insight, with expertise in a single market segment that can serve to customize a family’s liquidity needs, risk parameters and investment objectives. ”
