Ross Insurance Encourages the Massachusetts Community to Participate in the Great American Smokeout
Holyoke, MA (PRWEB) November 01, 2013 -- Ross Insurance, a Massachusetts-based independent insurance agency, encourages all smokers in the Massachusetts community to take part in the Great American Smokeout this year. Dating back at least 38 years ago, the Great American Smokeout has been held on the third Thursday of November. The American Cancer Society has announced that Thursday, November 21st will be the date this year.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, equaling to about 1 in 5 adults. This number still ranks high, even with tobacco use remaining as the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death. The agency believes that it is time for smokers to take a stand for their health. On November 21st, smokers are encouraged to put down the cigarette for at least 24 hours, in hopes to kick-start the journey to quitting all together. By quitting, even for one day, smokers will be taking a brave and important step towards a healthier, better lifestyle.
In light of the event, Ross Insurance has put together a quick list of tips for smokers to get started:
• Make an official plan. Smokers should choose a date to begin and let their friends and family know about it. Accountability can help.
• Make a list of reasons to quit for extra motivation
• Remove cigarettes and tobacco products from the house
• Clean the house of the smoke smell to avoid temptation
• Find new hobbies to enjoy to help distract—whether its painting, running, or writing
• Keep a journal to document progress
• Stock up on oral substitutes, such as gum, hard candy, or carrot sticks
• Speak with a doctor about quitting
• If need be, start with a nicotine replacement, such as gum or the patch
Those who are successful in their efforts can look forward to a number of benefits, including a drop in blood pressure and heart rate, a brighter smile, improved blood circulation, improved lung functionality, and reduced risk of various cancers.
The agency also points out to its community and clientele that smokers tend to pay a higher premium rate than non smokers when it comes to life insurance. Individuals who quit smoking are not only improving their health and wallet, but may possibly see a premium reduction in the future. It is a win/win situation for all—the benefits are endless.
Ross Insurance sincerely hopes that all smokers in Massachusetts participate this year and wishes everyone the best as they take a step towards a healthier lifestyle.
