Drew Major Induction Into UVEF Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement
Provo, UT (PRWEB) November 01, 2013 -- The Utah Valley Entrepreneurial Forum (UVEF) announces the induction of Novell founder, tech guru, and prolific entrepreneur Drew Major into the UVEF Hall of Fame in a program hosted at the BYU Hinckley Center Nov. 1st. Inductees represent individuals and organizations with an enduring legacy of entrepreneurial excellence.
“I’ve been very fortunate to work with many great people over the years: my Superset partners, Ray Noorda and the Novell team, and folks at Arroyo / Cisco and Move Networks”, said Drew Major. “We recognized the power in connecting computers together and were able to develop products that provided great value to our customers.”
Known as the “Father of Netware,” Drew was one of the leaders in the development of computer networks. At its peak, Novell held 75% of world market share for network operating systems. At the epicenter of the birth of personal computer networking in 1981, Drew and his partners recognized the value in enabling PCs to share files, printers, and other resources via a local area network (LAN). One estimate states that NetWare’s $1 billion in annual sales resulted in a 40X annual multiplier effect in associated hardware, software, and value-added sales. The broad deployment of LANs was the key foundational element upon which the Internet was built.
“The long tail influence of Drew’s career on Utah’s tech industry is huge,” states Ken Kaufman, 2013 UVEF Chairman. “Hundreds of startup companies and tens of thousands of jobs are among the benefits we enjoy in the wake of economic growth coming from Drew Major. This news today will travel around the globe leveraging technology developed directly or indirectly by this man.”
The UVEF Hall of Fame is a home town lifetime achievement honor following on Major’s global recognition in 1995 as one of the 20 Most Influential People over two decades in the computer industry. In 1999 Major was inducted into the National Computer Industry Hall of Fame and the Utah Technology Hall of Fame in 2005.
Drew’s contribution to technology continues as an investor and developer. These include advanced work in streaming video with Move Networks and his continuing work with Dish Digital, a jointly owned subsidiary of Dish Networks and Echostar.
Drew Major joins UVEF Hall of Fame inductees including George & Olive Osmond, Stephen R. Covey, Dr. Bill Pope, Harold “Hal” Wing, Eyring Research Institute, WordPerfect, Novell, and BYU Center for Entrepreneurship.
