A Big Gesture of Thanks: 2-Night Cabin Stay Gifted to Veterans; Spots Still Available

Opossum Creek Retreat is giving 2 free nights in any of their cabins to veterans during Veterans Day weekend.

We don't care if you are homeless. You won't be for 2 nights.

Opossum Creek Retreat is giving 2 free nights in any of their cabins to veterans during Veterans Day weekend.

The offer is available to any veteran for Nov. 8 and 9 or Nov. 10 and 11 until the cabins are all booked.

"People ask why we're being so generous," said Geoff Heeter, owner of the family business. He designed and built the OCR cabins. "That kind of catches us off guard. What we're doing for them doesn't compare to what they've done for us, but it's our humble attempt to show our gratitude."

Opossum Creek Retreat cabins are secluded, off a gravel road in Lansing, WV, within the New River Gorge. Every cabin has a fully equipped kitchen and a hot tub. Some can sleep up to 20 guests, and all are open to veterans for this deal.

Heeter's own experiences with veterans made him want to give back as much as he could. During his year off after high school, he said he met many veterans, all of whom shared stories of their service.

"I had never seen a grown man break down before," he said. "It made me a better person, and I hope my listening helped lighten their load in some small way. But if I know I can do more, I will, and that's why we do this."

Heeter can only offer the one weekend of free stays, but plans to continue the deal annually, as they have the past few years. Heeter and his staff want to make sure it's extended to every veteran they can reach.

For that reason, he asks that everyone who takes advantage stay only once, and also help spread the word about the deal, so that more veterans can enjoy the free stay.

"We don't care if you are homeless," he said. "You won't be for 2 nights."

During their stay, guests can also learn more about what to do in the area from the OCR staff or website. In addition to New River Gorge adventure activities, there are dining options, scenic trails, relaxation opportunities, and other activities near the cabin site.

To take advantage of the offer or for more information, veterans can contact OCR at (888) 488-4836 or online at http://www.opossumcreek.com.

If the weekend is full this year, veterans can book for next year with the deal as well, or use the 10 percent discount OCR offers to veterans year-round.
