Mani Zadeh, MD, FACS, is the medical director of the Revision Sinus Surgery Center of Excellence, a department of La Peer Health Systems in Los Angeles. In a recent interview, Dr. Zadeh said that his patients are experiencing lasting, positive results from revision sinus surgery performed by his team. Dr. Zadeh recently performed surgery on five cases which were both complex and challenging. In each instance, the patient was extremely pleased with the results. Using a dissolvable implant known as Propel, Dr. Zadeh was able to clear the obstructions, relieve symptoms, and restore normal breathing function in each patient.

“This is a great option for patients who have already undergone initial sinus surgery,” said Dr. Zadeh. “Each patient was very happy to no longer have to suffer through the symptoms of chronic sinusitis.”
Propel is a dissolvable implant developed by Intersect ENT that’s used in chronic sinusitis patients undergoing sinus surgery. Propel offers localized, controlled gradual delivery of corticosteroid directly to the sinus tissue. After the steroid is delivered, the implant dissolves within the body without issue.

“The best thing about treating chronic sinusitis with this method is the recovery,” said Dr. Zadeh. “The surgery provides immediate results with reduced pain, allowing the patient to return to work and their normal routine in a matter of a few days. Recovery from primary surgery takes twice as long.”

Chronic sinusitis is very common and involves constant inflammation or infection of the sinus. In many cases, symptoms of chronic sinusitis can be quite debilitating for patients. Sinusitis is usually first treated with medication and nasal sprays. If the problem persists, endoscopic surgery is the best choice for relieving symptoms.
