The 2013-14 National Basketball Association season is underway and the Eastern Conference is already looking as though they are filled with the most powerhouse teams. The two-time defending champion Miami Heat have begun the season at 2-2, while the upstart Indiana Pacers (4-0), Detroit Pistons (2-1), Philadelphia 76ers (3-1) and Toronto Raptors (2-1) are trying to make waves. There are other teams that haven't gotten out of the gate as quickly as expected including the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks. The Knicks, led by Carmelo Anthony, are 1-2 and have lost two straight after winning their season opener.
Anthony has gotten off to a solid start for the Knicks, leading the team in scoring with 21 points per game. That number is down a bit from his 2012-13 total that saw him score an average of 28.7 ppg. Despite the drop in scoring in the early going, Anthony has still been the best player on the team this season. He also leads the Knicks in steals per game with 2.3.
When looking at the Knicks offense, one would expect to see large numbers across the board from their starters and reserves. That hasn't been the case in the early going as only Raymond Felton (13 ppg) and Iman Shumpert (11.7 ppg) are averaging double digits. The team was expecting to see major production from longtime fan favorite Metta World Peace, but has just given the team 9.7 ppg in 20 minutes per game.
Despite their slow start, the Knicks are still considered one of the favorites in the tough conference along with the Heat, Nets and Pacers. The Knicks roster is filled with talented players that don't jump off the stat sheet alone, but when combined, put together a formidable team. Tyson Chandler is the anchor for the team at center and the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year is the man who will be relied upon to defend the other talented big men in the conference.
The Knicks are also looking to get more out of Amar'e Stoudemire than they have gotten him from the Phoenix Suns in 2009. After a stellar first season the Big Apple, Stoudemire played in just 76 games in the past two seasons and just one this season. The former NBA Rookie of the Year will look to stay off the injured list this season and lead the Knicks to the playoffs.
Fans in New York City have the chance to catch their favorite team compete at the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden. The current location for MSG opened in 1968 and has recently undergone changes that are meant to make the entire experience for fans a great one. The arena is located Fifth Avenue and Broadway at 23rd Street in Manhattan and can seat more than 19,800 cheering Knick fans. With their roster of stars – both new and old – MSG could be the place to be on game nights in the city.
