Los Angeles based Personal Protection agency, Worldwide Intelligence Network, has experienced a spike in requests for bodyguards following the recent shooting at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
“Incidents like the recent LAX shooting show that places like airports, where security is more prevalent, can also be the site of random acts of extreme violence,” Robert Mann, founder of Worldwide Intelligence Network and lead investigator states.
According to FBI statistics, last year there was an estimated 1,214,462 violent crimes that occurred nationwide, showing an increase of 0.7 percent from the 2011 estimate. Even though 2012 figures were 12.9 percent below the 2008 estimate, the general sense of the public seems to be that society is becoming more violent, a feeling that is expressed in the inquiries received by the agency.
Mann offers tips based on his experience in personal protection. “There are some important steps you can take to save your life in an incident like a public shooting. The first is to run away in the opposite direction as soon as you hear anything that sounds like firecrackers or gunshots. Head toward a door leading to a closet or restroom, where you can take shelter in a stall or secluded spot. You can also try taking cover behind a counter or kiosk. Hide quietly so that the shooter doesn’t hear you. If you can’t do those things and find yourself face to face with the shooter, never attempt to reason with them. Don’t scream, and try to throw an object at them, such as your luggage. Taking them by surprise is key. If they see you as you’re running away, run in a zig zag motion so that it makes it difficult for them to aim and shoot.”
