New York Car Accident Lawyer Adnan Munawar Comments on NYPD Collision Report Data
(PRWEB) November 07, 2013 -- The NYPD recently published a report detailing the number of fatalities and injuries that resulted from vehicular collisions during the month of September (NYPD: 1,475 Pedestrians and Cyclists Injured, 15 Killed in September, Motor Vehicle Collision Report, September 2013). In total, there were 16,930 motor vehicle collisions in New York City in the month of September involving 39,939 people. Of those involved, there were 4,977 reported injuries and 26 fatalities. Among pedestrians and cyclists, the number of fatalities remained almost identical as compared to the same period in 2012, but the number of injuries increased from 11,351 to 11,811.
The NYPD report also detailed the contributing factors that lead to the collisions. By far the largest contributing factor was “Driver Inattention/Distraction,” which was listed as contributing 2,397 times. The next largest category was “Following Too Closely,” which was recorded as a contributing factor 1,094 times. Other widely reported categories were, “Backing Unsafely,” “Failure to Yield Right of Way,” “Unsafe Lane Change,” and “Passing or Lane Usage Improper.” In all, there were 32 total categories of contributing factors given by the report.
“This report should be illuminating to anyone who was unaware of just how common motor vehicle accidents are in this city,” said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. “According to the data in the report, there were over 564 motor vehicle collisions, 165 injuries, and nearly one fatality every day in New York City during the month of September on average. While the report does not detail the extent to which people suffered serious injuries, but any time there is a motor vehicle involved in an accident, the consequences can be dire.”
Mr. Munawar further commented, “The city has been taking steps towards making travel safer for pedestrians and bikers, by installing bike lanes and erecting barriers, but drivers need to do their part and remain focused while they are behind the wheel. The Citi Bike program is now in effect and there may be even more bicycles on the road as a result. Pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists all need to be aware of one another and navigate the city with caution. In the event that someone is in an accident, they should know that they may have the right to pursue a claim against the person who caused the accident, and they should not hesitate to seek the compensation they deserve".
Anyone who is injured in a motor vehicle accident should contact an attorney right away and begin the process of filing a claim immediately. Consultation is free, and fees are only collected if the claim is successful.
