New York Mint Aligns With the China Mint and the Smithsonian Institution to Release World’s First 2014 Smithsonian Panda Proofs
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) November 07, 2013 -- New York Mint®, the world’s leading source and direct marketer of high-value collectible coins, is releasing in conjunction with the China Mint and the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s first Silver and Gold Smithsonian Panda Proofs. Lovable giant pandas first captured America’s heart over 40 years ago when they arrived in the U.S. from China and debuted at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. The excitement continued this summer when Mei Xiang gave birth to a female panda cub, and the pair has captivated millions. In celebration of four decades of giant pandas at the National Zoo, the Smithsonian Institution and the China Mint are releasing first-ever Panda Proofs. This is the first time the award-winning China Mint has struck special issue Panda Proofs in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution.
The 2014 Smithsonian Panda Proofs are available in 99.9% pure silver and 99.9% fine gold in varying sizes/weights from a one tenth ounce set to five ounce proofs. The reverse of the Panda Proofs features images of the National Zoo’s adult giant panda pair, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. The obverse depicts the Great Wall of China and the Smithsonian Castle with varying images displayed on the proofs. The Panda Proofs have been individually certified and graded by Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC), one of the world’s leading independent third party grading services. Each stunning Smithsonian Panda Proof is accompanied by individually numbered mint certificates of authenticity and presented in an official mint display box.
New York Mint and the China Mint have been working together for over 25 years, and New York Mint has been and continues to be a top seller of China Mint coins. In addition, New York Mint has been a long-standing licensee of the Smithsonian Institution and has worked on many historic programs together over the years.
“It is an absolute pleasure to bring together the China Mint and the Smithsonian Institution for this monumental program to recognize these beloved giant pandas and celebrate them through these limited edition Panda Proofs,” said Bill Gale, President of New York Mint. “We are honored to collaborate with the China Mint and the Smithsonian Institution to offer and provide our customers with the opportunity to add these Panda Proofs to their collections.”
A portion of the sales of these proofs will support the Smithsonian. In addition, New York Mint is donating a set to the Smithsonian Institution so museum-goers can enjoy these world’s first Smithsonian authorized panda proofs for years to come.
