Cisco Visual Networking Index has predicted that by the end of 2013, the number of mobile devices will surpass the number of people on earth, and by 2017 there will be almost 1.4 mobile devices per capita. Cisco also forecasts that global mobile data traffic will increase 13-fold between 2012 and 2017. Mobile data traffic will reach 11.2 exabytes per month by 2017, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 66 percent from 2012 to 2017.

Since wireless providers must supply the demand for wireless capacity, these providers are dependent upon property owners who are willing to lease their land for cell tower and antenna placement. In addition to site acquisitioning, wireless providers must maintain and secure their current cell sites.

The forecasts provided by Cisco Visual Networking Index provides how cellular phone towers and antennas’ capacity, value, and negotiations related to their placement and their existing cell tower leases play a vital role in the amount and quality of wireless data service available to consumers. Many property owners leasing their land for the placement of telecom equipment do not realize how valuable their land is to the telecom industry, especially in this era of extreme demand for wireless data.
