Fundraising Campaign for Lancaster’s Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute Receives National Recognition
Lancaster, Pa. (PRWEB) November 08, 2013 -- Lancaster, Pa., law firm Hartman Underhill & Brubaker, LLC (HUB) is pleased to announce that the ‘You and I Will Change Lives’ campaign, led by Walt Legenstein, CEO of Certified Carpet, and Kim Smith, a partner at HUB and a breast cancer survivor, was recognized by The Advisory Board (a global technology and research firm) and the Association of Health Care Philanthropy for raising $25 million toward the $46 million Lancaster General Health Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute.
The campaign, launched in 2011, raised the substantial funds in a market of just 500,000 people. A leadership gift of $5 million from Lancaster philanthropist Ann B. Barshinger was followed by gifts from more than 825 individual donors and more than 50 corporate donors. The 90,000-square-foot Lancaster General Health Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute opened to the community in July of 2013.
Walt Legenstein served as the campaign chair and Kim Smith served as the communications committee chair of the campaign.
"It was such an honor to work with Walt, the Campaign Committee, and the Foundation staff on this very special project," said Smith. "The Cancer Institute is a gift by the community for the community that will transform care for cancer patients and their families. As a volunteer who was part of the process, it just doesn't get much better than that."
About the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute
The two-story, 90,000-square-foot Cancer Institute integrates advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies with nature. The connection to living systems has been shown to regenerate and heal, soothe the patient’s mind and body and create a feeling of serenity.
Abundant natural light, a wall of living plants, natural wood finishes, terrazzo flooring, terra cotta walls, and art, hand-selected by Lancaster General Health’s Healing Arts Commission, transform the building into a warm and welcoming place. At the heart of the design lies a healing garden landscaped with native plants, water, paths and stone benches. The garden offers contemplative spaces for patients and families to interact with nature and find comfort by the meditation pavilion.
The care team includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, nurses, nurse navigators, and a symptom management nurse practitioner, along with an oncology support staff of social workers, dietitian, psychologist, lymphedema therapist, genetic counselors, chaplain and financial counselor, who ensure the patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs are met.
Nine family consultation rooms, 37 examination rooms, and eight areas where physicians and nurses collaborate, are strategically built in eight pods along the curved-shaped hallway, designed to enhance privacy. The 31 private and semi-private infusion therapy/chemotherapy suites allow patients to personalize their treatment areas with their choice of music or television, temperature and light.
