Sport and Spine Rehab Locations Will Be Supporting Toys for Tots Again This Holiday Season
Fort Washington, MD (PRWEB) November 09, 2013 -- In 1947, Bill Hendricks’ wife Diane crafted a homemade doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization, which would distribute it to underprivileged children. However, upon further investigation, Bill found that no such organization existed. So Bill took it upon himself to start such an agency, Toys for Tots!
Later in 1947, Bill, USCR, and a group of Marine Reservists collected and distributed 5,000 toys to underprivileged children. And because of the success of the program, the Marines adopted Toys for Tots the following year and have conducted successful nationwide campaigns at Christmas each year since.
Since 1947, the Marines have distributed more than 452 million toys to more than 209 million needy children. In 1995, the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official activity of the U. S. Marine Corps and an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve.
This year, one of our Sport and Spine Rehab Patient Services team members, Lois Williams, threw down the gauntlet when she offered to donate a company service award money gift she received, and match it personally, to the Marines Toys for Tots campaign. Then she challenged the rest of the Sport and Spine Rehab team members to provide a similar donation. The Sport and Spine Rehab locations were set up as receiving sites for both money donations and toys. Lois’ son is a veteran of a twelve month tour of duty in Afghanistan and was recently promoted to Sergeant in the Army; her husband is a retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant who spent 20 years in the service of our country including 2 tours in Vietnam.
How to help!
Please drop off new, unwrapped toy or a money donation to any of the seven SSR locations in the Toys for Tots Drop box. Help the Marines with their goal to deliver a message of hope to children in need and motivate them to grow to be responsible, productive citizens and future leaders. And help Sport and Spine Rehab fulfill its mission this holiday season to enrich the lives of those who need it, one life at a time.
