The F1 in Schools World Finals 2013 takes place Nov. 8-13 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Austin, Texas. More than 300 students from 22 countries will compete for the F1 in Schools World Champions 2013 crown. The competition will be fierce and as host country, teams from the United States will attempt to keep the Bernie Ecclestone World Champions trophy on home soil.
In the United States, the F1 in Schools Challenge is managed by SAE International, the world's premier engineering society dedicated to the advancement of the mobility community to serve society. SAE International has a long history of providing STEM education to youth including the award-winning A World In Motion® and the Collegiate Design Series competitions. The worldwide popularity of F1 racing adds to the excitement while providing a relevant background for simulating critical elements of engineering in the real world.
The 38 teams of students competing this year are looking forward to a highly competitive F1 in Schools World Finals, but they are also excited at the prospect of visiting Circuit of The Americas (COTA) and watching the 2013 FORMULA ONE UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX, courtesy of COTA. The students will be given VIP access to the circuit on Thursday of Grand Prix week with a visit to the COTA Tower and viewing of the Formula One team garages on a pit walk tour of the paddock.
Local support will focus on Lone Star Racing, a Texas collaborative F1 in Schools team, combining Axium Racing from Granbury High School, (Granbury, Texas) and Talon Racing from Akins High School (Austin, Texas).
Chloe Scroggins, 18-year-old Project Manager for Lone Star Racing, says, “We are eager to represent our home state of Texas amongst the various countries of the world and look forward to meeting the competitors from other countries. We can’t wait to see their faces when they see Texas!”
The camaraderie between the two halves of Lone Star Racing came to the fore earlier this year. As Chloe explains, “Texas encountered catastrophic tornadoes and storms in May. Our entire town was devastated, and one of Axium Racing’s team member’s houses was destroyed. He and his family were forced to stay with some friends. The day immediately after the storm, the team members of Talon Racing began to raise money for Granbury.
“They accumulated about $1,500 along with buying supplies and gathering clothes. The following day, Talon Racing visited Granbury High School and gave the Axium member the money they had raised to help his family and the numerous bags filled with supplies to help the members of the Granbury community get back on their feet. On this day, Lone Star Racing actually became a family instead of a clumsy compilation of teams. We were able to hang out and forget about the madness of the tornado, and for that we are truly grateful”.
Alongside Lone Star Racing will be the USA F1 in Schools National Champions, Allegiance Racing from South East High School, Florida and Imperia from Manheim Township High School.
Aly Cote, 15-year-old Team Manager for Allegiance Racing says, “Hosting the F1 in Schools World Finals right in our backyard and being the USA National Champions is a big responsibility for our team. It is our goal to do a great job making all of the teams visiting from around the world feel welcome. The United States is an amazing country and we want to honor our nation by doing a great job through our participation at the F1 in Schools World Finals. We not only have to represent the U.S., but also ourselves; and we hope to do it exceptionally. Our dedication to the U.S. and our loyalty to its tradition is the reason we named our team Allegiance Racing.”
The F1 in Schools World Finals take place from 8th to 13th November in Austin, Texas. Each team of between three and six students brings together their work to present to a judging panel with a verbal and written presentation to support their model car, which is raced on a specially designed test track. At the World Finals each team will bring along a pit display, three identical cars and portfolio, as well as having prepared a presentation for the judges. The cars race on a 20-meter track, with the cars covering the distance in just over one second, a speed barrier which is yet to be broken by any student team since it was set by Team FUGA from Northern Ireland at the 2007 World Finals at 1.020 seconds.
The F1 in Schools World Finals take place with the assistance of a host of sponsors and supporters including Circuit of The Americas, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, City University London, Autodesk and Austin Independent Schools District.

F1 in Schools challenges students to create their own Formula One team which is commissioned to design, manufacture and race the fastest miniature Formula One Car of the Future; a 21cm long scale model designed using 3D solid modelling software and machined from a block of balsa wood, incorporating 3D print technology in its front and rear wings. At the World Finals each team will bring along a pit display, their cars and portfolio, as well as having prepared a verbal presentation for the judges. The cars race on a 20 metre track, with the cars covering the distance in just over one second, a speed barrier which is yet to be broken by any student team since it was set by Team FUGA from Northern Ireland at the 2007 World Finals with a time of 1.020 seconds.
