Frontman of Arctic Monkeys on their new sound: 'almost like the Spiders From Mars covering Aaliyah. There's like a shimmery, intergalactic, slightly cosmic element to the way both those genres make me feel.'
South Windsor, CT (PRWEB) November 08, 2013
The English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys has announced new U.S. tour dates for 2014, in support of their latest album, AM. The band will have their biggest headliner in the country to date at Madison Square Garden in New York on February 8.
After completing their European tour, the Arctic Monkeys will play shows at 12 cities in the States. The tour kicks off in Miami on January 30 and wraps up on Valentine’s Day in Minneapolis. The self-described “experimental noise rock” band Deerhunter will join Arctic Monkeys for their New York and Boston shows.
Since Arctic Monkeys' 2006 debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, which was the fastest-selling album in British music history at the time, the band’s decidedly post-punk, garage-band sound distinguished them early on. Their fifth and latest album, released in September, marks a significant shift to spacey, expansive rock laced with Justin Timberlake-flavored falsetto harmonies. In songs like “Do I Wanna Know,” one can also hear hints of the Black Keys, for whom Arctic Keys opened in the U.S. in 2012.
Frontman Alex Turner described their new sound to Rolling Stone as "almost like the Spiders From Mars covering Aaliyah. There's like a shimmery, intergalactic, slightly cosmic element to the way both those genres make me feel."
AM has already received great reception, becoming Arctic Monkeys' fifth No. 1 album in a row on the UK album charts. Arctic Monkeys is the only independent band to have achieved this distinction in the UK. The album also gave the band its best debut in the U.S., returning to the U.S. Top 10 for the first time since 2007 while reaching Number 6 on the Billboard 200.
