Edvance360, a leading provider of eLearning solutions, one of the top ten tools for online teaching, as well as 2011 winner and five-time-finalist for the CODiE Award for Best Course or Learning Management System, announced a MOOC starting on 11/11/2013 geared toward parents on the topic of internet safety. Using resources approved by security conscious organizations, this inestimable course, “Internet Safety for Parents,” will offer practical advice to parents to facilitate discussion around the inherent dangers children face on the internet and other technology venues today−from cyber-bullying to safe gaming practices. The course contains action-provoking resources designed for parents and those wish to S.E.C.U.R.E. (Supervise, Enroll, Communicate, Understand, Review, Engage) the safety of our children.

There will be no limit to the number of students who may sign up. The course includes a series of impactful videos, discussions of practical dilemmas parents face, and opportunities to facilitate interaction between parents and their children on these safety topics. Those who complete the course will receive a digital badge certifying completion of the course.

Registration is now open for the course, which spans five lessons but may be taken anytime by the end of the year. To register, click here. Additional MOOCs are scheduled to start in conjunction with Safer Internet Day, February 11, 2014.

“Every parent should ask themselves difficult questions ‘Am I training my children to practice safety and think smart, when it comes to technology? Am I even aware of all the ways technology is impacting the safety of my kids?’” Dr. Jeff Burleson, one of the key MOOC facilitators said.

“Edvance360 is uniquely positioned to offer this MOOC to the parents and teachers in our network of Learning Management System schools and districts,” said Cathy Garland, Vice-President of Edvance360. “Our mission at Edvance360 is to build life-long learners and our new MOOC network extends the reach of MOOCs to schools and organizations that might not be able to offer MOOCs through large networks such as Coursera™ or EdX™. Education is what we’re about and MOOCs are an excellent resource to provide education outside the traditional methods.”

This MOOC is offered on MOOC360, Edvance360’s free, flexible option for running massive open online courses (MOOCs). With smaller institutions looking to offer large, open courses, but not able to take advantage of the large networks such as Coursera and EdX, this option provides institutions a fully functional, flexible platform option complete with social learning capabilities and a wide range of course management and student engagement features.

MOOC360 is available to all Edvanc360 clients as well as the public at no extra cost in a non-binding manner and lets institutions retain full control over the form and direction of their MOOCs.

Several features within Edvance360 LMS-SN are currently being used for MOOCs/SMOOCs to make the courses more successful. These include easy processes for MOOC facilitators, mobile apps, badges or certificates for completions, social networking tools, and learning paths that take guesswork out of online learning. Currently, clients using Edvance360’s MOOC features are experiencing a 25-50% retention rate (click here for case study), which is significantly higher than the 7% experienced elsewhere.
