Chicago’s Perfect 10 Race to Benefit Area Cancer Research Charity, Nov. 9
Schaumburg, Ill. (PRWEB) November 08, 2013 -- On Saturday, Nov. 9, nearly 3,500 runners and competitive walkers alike will lace up their sneakers to compete in Chicago’s Perfect 10, a family-fun and competitive 10 mile and 10 kilometer race held at Navy Pier. This year’s event benefits the Gateway for Cancer Research, a nonprofit organization based out of suburban Chicago that funds truly innovative cancer research studies all over the world.
“It’s an honor to be chosen as the charity beneficiary for this great event,” said Karen Kay, director of Development at the Gateway for Cancer Research. “Cancer hits close to home for many of the runners, and their generous donations will truly make a difference as we fund potentially life-saving clinical trials that give hope to cancer patients right here in Chicago and throughout the world.”
Among the 27 cancer clinical trials currently funded by Gateway for Cancer Research is a brain cancer research study led by Dr. Robert Aiken at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Aiken’s clinical trial explores the effectiveness of a promising new drug that selectively targets and destroys malignant brain cancer cells with the. The goal is to spare healthy cells and tissue, thereby potentially helping more brain cancer patients to live life to the fullest, or to be cured.
Gateway’s charity athlete team, Team Demand, will be in full force to run and walk Chicago’s Perfect 10 while sporting fluorescent green t-shirts that boldly proclaim “Demand Cures Today.” Team Demand is comprised of athletes of all fitness levels who enjoy new challenges and are passionate about raising money for cancer research. Ninety-nine cents of every dollar Gateway and Team Demand participants receive directly funds phase I and phase II cancer clinical trials to help patients feel better, live longer or be cured today.
Joining Team Demand for Chicago’s Perfect 10 race are members of Gateway’s Associates Board of Directors. Formed earlier this year, the Associates Board is comprised of rising young professionals who are helping Gateway to rally more supporters through creative fundraising events and initiatives.
Kay adds that Team Demand is all about having fun, staying fit and doing something good for cancer patients who may have very few treatment options. “Knowing that fundraising can be intimidating for some, we don’t impose fundraising minimums on our athletes,” Kay pointed out. “We’re grateful for any level of support Team Demand members can provide, and for their help in spreading our urgent message that innovative cancer research is needed if we want to see cures in this generation.”
Registration for Chicago’s Perfect 10 is open through race day on Nov. 9. Individuals who sign up with Team Demand will receive a $10 discount code to use at event registration. Learn more about Team Demand and sign up today at DemandCuresToday.org/TeamDemand.
