Gibbs Smith Education Announces Featured Speaker at NCSS Annual Conference
Layton, Utah (PRWEB) November 11, 2013 -- Gibbs Smith Education, developer of customized state social studies programs, is presenting and exhibiting at the 93rd annual National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Conference in St. Louis from Nov. 22 to Nov. 24. The session will focus on integrating Common Core ELA standards into social studies instruction. In addition to the presentation, Gibbs Smith will display its award-winning programs in the exhibit hall.
Kate Coombs, curriculum director at Gibbs Smith Education, will present “Getting History Write: Common Core Strategies for Your Classroom,” which focuses on using writing to enhance student learning about history. Coombs will debunk five common myths about writing instruction, offer teachers the opportunity to participate in a brief model writing activity, and provide purposeful strategies to help students improve their writing—especially about primary sources.
“As a past writing specialist and teacher trainer, I worked closely with students and educators to design strategies for writing across the curriculum,” said Coombs. “What's wonderful is that strengthening the writing component in a history classroom doesn't just meet the Common Core Standards, but it also helps teachers meet their own objectives for student learning."
Coombs’s proposal was chosen from more than 900 submissions, and went through a rigorous evaluation process before being accepted by the NCSS. Her session will take place on Nov. 23, 2:45-3:45 p.m. CST, in room 123 of the America’s Center Convention Complex.
Throughout the three-day conference, Gibbs Smith Education will showcase its state-specific social studies programs at Booth 632, the company’s first time exhibiting in more than five years. Gibbs Smith Education will showcase its newest textbooks approved by the Tennessee Textbook Commission, Tennessee Through Time: The Early Years and Tennessee Through Time: The Later Years, as well as an extensive selection of print and digital materials aligned to state social studies standards and the Common Core.
“Our social studies programs are created from the ground up, beginning with each state’s social studies standards and unique history,” said Brad Farmer, CEO of Gibbs Smith Education. “More than 30 states utilize our social studies programs, therefore it’s imperative that our resources engage students in social studies while enhancing essential skills and cross-curricular learning opportunities.”
