Carl Zeiss faces New Competition from Haag-Streit, Nidek and Topcon in the $600 Million Diagnostic Ophthalmic Device Market, reports iData Research
Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) November 11, 2013 -- iData Research, the leading global authority in medical device and pharmaceutical market research, has recently published a report for the U.S. diagnostic ophthalmic device markets. The report estimates a combined market value of $597 million and growing; expected to reach nearly $800 million by 2020. These markets include optical coherence tomographers (OCTs), fundus cameras, slit lamps, perimeters, tonometers, autorefractors and keratometers, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopes, ophthalmic ultrasound systems, wavefront aberrometers, corneal topographers and optical biometers.
Fast-Growing Market: OCT
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is experiencing double-digit growth due to strong sales of combination OCT devices such as OCT with built-in fundus cameras and OCT scanning laser ophthalmoscopes. “More than half of devices currently sold are combination devices. In fact, the amalgamation of different tools is a widespread phenomenon in the U.S. ophthalmics market,” says Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. “In addition, our research covers autorefractors combined with keratometers or non-contact tonometers, amongst others.” Growth is expected to continue over the forecast period, with combination OCT devices accounting for an increasing share of the overall market.
Increased Competition
The market for optical biometry devices is also growing as the U.S. population ages and the number of cataract procedures increase. As a result, new optometry practices are opening and existing practices are making investments to expand their capacity necessitating the purchase of biometry equipment.
Carl Zeiss has traditionally been the leader of both the U.S. and European optical biometry market with their pioneering device, IOL Master™. Currently, they hold over three quarters of the U.S. market for optical biometers. This represents a slight decline as their main competitor, Haag-Streit shows market share gains. In the near future there will be additional pressure on Carl Zeiss to maintain its market share. Established competitors in Europe, Nidek and Topcon, are currently waiting for FDA approval. These two new entrants into the U.S. are expected to generate aggressive competition.
The information above is derived from a global report series entitled Markets for Diagnostic Ophthalmic Devices, which includes market analysis for the U.S., Germany, France, U.K., Italy, Spain, Benelux, Scandinavia, Portugal, Austria, and Switzerland.
