“Stafford Hospital nurse given caution for putting patients at risk” Asons Comment
Bolton, UK (PRWEB UK) 15 November 2013 -- According to The Telegraph, the decision made by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has been critiqued, as the nurse in question was formally found guilty of misconduct. Families of those affected are demanding she receives a stronger punishment, surplus to the 5 year ban from nursing she has received (1).
Ms Harry was held responsible for a number of accounts of medical negligence, along with other misdemeanors, including - failing to provide patients with dignity and privacy, failing to ensure there were enough nurses on call, and allowing general standards of nursing to fall below a safe standard (1).
Speaking on the conviction, Suzanne Yates from Medical Negligence Solicitors, Asons, said:
“Considering this nurse was found to be practicing negligently, it is somewhat of a surprise that her punishment was so lenient, compared to others that have been publicised in recent years. Mistakes made by nurses can have worrying consequences, as they play such a crucial role in a patient’s recovery.
“Understandably, the families of those subjected to negligence are still hurt by the events that took place. With good reason, they want answers, and to see someone held responsible. In many of the medical negligence claims we have seen at Asons, those taking legal action want to find out who was responsible for their suffering, and for them to admit liability for the damage done. In this example, this isn’t the case.”
Stafford hospital was subjected to a major public inquiry, after it was discovered by health care officials that the substandard care that was being provided could have contributed to the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of patients. Amidst the findings of the inquiry, Sir Robert Francis QC discovered that 1,200 died from what was described as medical malpractice and clinical negligence.
Continuing to comment, Ms Yates said:
“The Stafford scandal is still very much a serious issue among the NHS. The report found that thousands of people were subjected to poor care, and victims are still coming forward with their complaints of poor treatment.
“In our experience, while medical negligence compensation never balances the damage done, an admittance of guilt, and an assurance that lessons have been learnt, can be of comfort to the family.”
Nurses have a duty of care that they are legally required to uphold. If the care received falls below this standard, they may be liable to pay compensation for any damage caused to the victim.
