State Fire Marshal Advises Those Using New Communication Technologies to Test Their Alarm Monitoring Systems

Most alarm systems communicate with alarm monitoring centers through a telephone line using a complex touch-tone signal sent to the alarm monitoring station. With new digital communication technology such as digital subscriber lines (DSL), voice over internet protocol (VoIP), and wireless, the signals may or may not be received correctly by an alarm monitoring station.

If your business or organization has already switched phone systems or is thinking about switching, I encourage you to contact your alarm company and confirm that the communication technology you want to switch to is compatible with your alarm system.

As more homes and businesses decide to change from analog to digital telephone technologies, Oregon State Fire Marshal Mark Wallace reminds them to be sure these new technologies are compatible with their fire and sprinkler alarm systems.

Any alarm signals that are missed or reproduced inaccurately may result in the alarm not being received or handled properly by the alarm monitoring system.
