Rhino Security Labs, an industry leader in information security, announces vulnerability assessment opportunities as November 30th's National Computer Security Day approaches. In coordination with the annual event, Rhino Security Labs will be offering a free webinar for small businesses on how to better protect themselves from cyber-attacks. Started in 1998 as a way for the general public to remind themselves of computer and technology related security issues, National Computer Security Day is a reminder for companies and individuals to change their passwords, patch their systems, and generally protect their digital data.
According to various studies, security issues are often compromised by the most basic of vulnerabilities. Principal Consultant at Rhino Security Labs, Benjamin Caudill, comments. "National Computer Security Day is a great reminder for all of us to really look at how intertwined our lives are with technology. Laptops and desktop computers are the first types of technologies that people usually associate with vulnerabilities. However, smart phones and tablets have become such commonplace these days that many of us don't realize they are computers at heart. That means they're often vulnerable to attacks as well." He continues. "This is where our free webinar comes in. From obvious risks to complex vulnerabilities, we use the latest technologies and industry-certified professionals to work with businesses and government agencies to identify and mitigate those threats."
Microsoft Security Intelligence Report provided statistics for last year's computer vulnerabilities. The findings illustrate that approximately 16 million households have experienced serious virus problems within the 24 months prior to the report. Additionally, 8 million households reported spyware, and 1 million households lost money due to phishing. The cost to US households for spyware, phishing and viruses is estimated to be near $4.55 billion. What makes these numbers even more staggering is that they are related to households, not businesses. These figures do not take into account corporate and enterprise vulnerabilities, all of which make the numbers even larger. This makes National Computer Security Day that much more important to pay attention to.
