Feinstein Institute Encourages Science Education for NY Area Middle and High School Students
Manhasset, NY (PRWEB) November 13, 2013 -- The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the North Shore-LIJ Health System Center for Workforce Readiness recently hosted nearly 100 middle and high school teachers from Long Island and Manhattan for a day to discuss how to best incorporate science and medical research into their academic curriculum. In response to the turnout, representatives from the Workforce Readiness Center and the Feinstein Institute vowed to continue the North Shore-LIJ Medical Marvels Program, which encourages Long Island high school students in 9th and 10th grades to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The winning teams of this program will receive scholarships. To participate, a letter of intent must be submitted by December 1, 2013.
“Middle and high school teachers have the challenging and critical task of teaching their students science,” said Feinstein Institute President Kevin J. Tracey, MD at the teacher’s professional development day. “It’s a challenging task because science is a new language for students and it’s critical because current students will be future scientists who will invent new medicines to cure tomorrow’s diseases.”
Teachers who attended the professional development day on November 5 were encouraged to participate in the Medical Marvels program, in which three teams will receive awards. The winning team will receive a $1,800 scholarship and individual team members will be considered for placement in the Feinstein Institute’s summer program. The second-place team will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the third-place team will receive a $500 scholarship. In addition, the winning team’s faculty mentor will receive a $500 grant towards the purchase of equipment or supplies for his or her classroom.
Any New York State-accredited educational institution in Nassau or Suffolk counties is eligible to apply. A letter of intent (LOI) must be submitted by December 1 to CWR(at)nshs(dot)edu. The LOI should be:
*signed by the appropriate building principal(s) or district administrator
*submitted on institutional letterhead
and include the following three sections:
*a brief history of the school district and its programs in STEM education;
*a concise description of the programs that will be leveraged for this project and how students will be selected for participation; and
*identification of a designated faculty representative (including contact information) for the program at the school
Each eligible institution that submits an LOI will receive detailed report instructions and identify at least one multi-disciplinary team of students and a faculty mentor. The written report, which is due on February 14, 2014, will be submitted to a panel of Feinstein Institute scientists who will select the winners. Participants will be invited to attend a celebration event where the proposals will be displayed and the winners announced.
