Celebrate a Season of Wonder at the Adler Planetarium
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) November 13, 2013 -- Season of Wonder, a tradition for all ages, celebrates the magic of the winter season as only the Adler can. Featuring a sky show that explores the spectacular sights of the winter night sky, seasonal programming, a family snowflake-themed story time and a one-of-a-kind immersive experience in The World’s Largest Snow Globe, ‘tis the season to wonder, observe and discover at the Adler! Season of Wonder runs November 15, 2013 through January 5, 2014.

Larson, Ph.D., Adler Planetarium president and CEO. “With longer nights and less moisture in the air, viewing conditions are at their best and the night sky comes alive. Season of Wonder is a uniquely Adler tradition that the whole family will enjoy.”
To kick off the holiday season, the Adler will open early on Black Friday with special door buster deals. On November 29, 2013, from 8 a.m. through 10 a.m., visitors can purchase Half-Price Premium Passes. This promotion is valid for onsite purchases only. The first 50 guests to purchase discounted Premium Passes will also receive a special space-themed gift. Additionally, the first 50 guests to purchase annual memberships will receive a holiday gift.
Other Black Friday morning deals include a free small coffee or hot chocolate with purchase in Galileo’s Café and door buster deals in the Adler Store. Adding to the Black Friday festivities, the museum will host Doane-nuts from 9:30 to 11a.m., a public event featuring free solar observing in the Doane Observatory and complimentary donuts supplied by Dinkel's Bakery. Doane-nuts will take place in the Doane Observatory located lakeside behind the museum. Donuts will be available while supplies last.
Winter Sky Live
In the Adler’s seasonal sky show Winter Sky Live, audiences observe and discover seasonal constellations, visible solar system objects and the majestic beauty of nature’s most impressive light show, the Aurora Borealis, which comes to life right before their eyes. From the brilliant Northern Lights to icy comets streaking across the night sky, Winter Sky Live gives audiences a beautiful look at why the coldest months of the year are some of the most action-packed times to look up!
World’s Largest Snow Globe
During Season of Wonder, Adler visitors can also enjoy a one-of-a-kind immersive experience in the Grainger Sky Theater, the most technologically advanced dome theater in the world. Following every Cosmic Wonder or Welcome to the Universe show, the Grainger Sky Theater transforms into The World's Largest Snow Globe. Audiences find themselves immersed inside a 70-foot-tall virtual snow globe to experience a Chicago winter like no other. Featuring scenes of iconic Chicago locations from the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park to the Wrigley Building on the Magnificent Mile, this unique experience is only available at the Adler.
Seasonal Programming
Season of Wonder’s winter festivities extend throughout the museum with live demonstrations, interactive activities and space science news presentations. Be sure to check activity signs throughout the building for specific program information and times.
The Auroras: Lights in the Sky cart activity explores the causes and colors of auroras, nature’s brilliant light show. Guests experiment with magnetic fields, glowing gasses and more as they investigate this natural high-latitude phenomenon. Auroras: Lights in the Sky will be held on the Adler’s lower level from Friday, November 29 through Friday, January 3.
The Reasons for the Seasons cart activity explores why winter gets so cold by looking at how the Earth is always on the move. Guests learn how motion affects life on Earth and why our seasons are so different from one another. Reasons for the Seasons will be held on the Adler’s lower level from Friday, November 29, through Friday, January 3.
Current Space News: Icy Worlds Edition will explore the most frigid headlines from space including NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft that is speeding towards Pluto, scheduled to arrive in 2015. This special edition of Current Space News will be held in the Our Solar System gallery from Friday, November 29, through December 1 and December 26 through Friday, January 3.
Holiday Programs
On Saturday, December 7, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., the Adler will offer Snowflakes and Stories, a special holiday program that invites families to discover the complexity and beauty of snowflakes as they enjoy a paper snowflake lesson, live storytelling and the spectacle of The World’s Largest Snow Globe. Tickets are available for purchase at adlerplanetarium.org.
With themes that change every month, Adler After Dark offers guests 21+ unlimited shows, open access and unique entertainment. On Thursday, December 19, from 6 to 10 p.m., Adler After Dark - Season of Wonder will explore what makes wintertime the best time of year to go stargazing. Don’t miss the seasonal show Winter Sky Live and exclusive nighttime observing in the Doane Observatory. The Chicago Cultural Alliance will be on hand to showcase holiday traditions from cultures around the globe. Guests are encouraged to wear their tackiest holiday sweaters for a chance to win special holiday prizes.
