Greenville South Carolina

"Big city meets southern ease," says AARP

Greenville South Carolina is hailed by AARP’s October/November 2013 issue of The Magazine as a Top 5 City to Retire in the U.S. Greenville absolutely deserves this honor; this Upstate city is an all-around exceptional place to live. It went through a well-planned, well-executed downtown restoration and was introduced by AARP as “Big City Meets Southern Ease.” The idea of a big city implies cultural opportunities, a great restaurant scene, and great architecture on the positive side, all of which Greenville boasts. On the other side, however, a big city usually implies a high cost of living which Greenville does not have. Here’s where the “Big City” meets the “Southern Ease.” On NBC’s Today Show, the editor of AARP’s The Magazine talked about the Top 5 Cities to Retire and made a special note of Greenville’s “unique blend of modern architecture, historical landmarks, and the decadent restaurant scene” and we agree!

Greenville, one of the best places to retire in South Carolina, has received other accolades from the press. USA Today praised the affordability of Greenville, South Carolina and its great value with Greenville SC neighborhood affordable home prices. Esquire Magazine favorably compared Greenville’s “Southern Soul” to Atlanta’s lack of that desirable quality. The article went on to highlight the fact that Greenville’s “gastro-surge” is gaining on another small city in South Carolina, Charleston, which has held the top spot for being the best food city in the South for the last three years. The Financial Times’ bimonthly magazine called Greenville “the number-one ‘North American City of the Future’” with the highest foreign investment rate per capita in the U.S. Many businesses have moved the area for the favorable environment for both employers and employees which is great for any economy.

Culturally enhancing Greenville are activities such as the BJU Museum and Gallery, a symphonies and/or Broadway traveling shows at the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, live theater at any of three downtown theaters, and a wide variety of seasonal festivals held each year. Nearby Clemson University has a variety of programs, not the least of which its new Center for Visual Arts right in Greenville which offers a regular art education program. Outdoor activities that beckon residents include visiting Reedy Falls park to sun or play on the rocks around the falls, exploring Swamp Rabbit Trail and other popular walking and hiking trails, attending the US Pro Cycling Championship, or boating casually on the Jocasse and Keowee lakes. Gastronomically, residents, ‘foodies’, and visitors to this Greenville SC neighborhood can lunch at the Northgate Soda Shop, experience the dinner theater at Cafe and Then Some, and enjoy cocktails and dinner at any number of stellar restaurants followed by Jazz at Brown Street. With too many to name here, there is something for every one and every taste.
