ReliantHeart, Inc,. the manufacturer of the HeartAssist5® Ventricular Assist Device (VAD), has appointed Charles Richardson, M.D., M.B.A, the Product Architect and CEO of Cleveland Heart, to its Board of Directors.

Dr. Richardson co-founded Cleveland Heart whose medical technology focuses on Total Heart Replacement and ventricular assist devices. As Product Architect, he helped design the ground-breaking Total Heart Replacement, for which he won an innovation award.

Dr. Richardson has been primarily responsible for raising millions in private and public capital for the companies that he has co-founded. He has made private investments in the initial equity financing of companies and served as a member on Boards of Directors for early stage life science companies.

Dr. Richardson earned his M.D. with honors from Central America Health Sciences University School of Medicine, received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from the Winston-Salem State University, and completed the MBA program at the University of South Carolina at Moore School of Business.

In 2005, Dr. Richardson founded TransWorld Heart Corporation, whose mission is to dramatically improve the quality of life through innovative technology. The TransWorld Heart Soul Mate™ System senses naturally occurring electrical activity of the heart in real-time, and automatically applies electrical stimulation treatment if needed. The Soul Mate, which allows physicians to monitor patients remotely, is being marketed in Europe.

Dr. Richardson also founded and served as Chief Operating Officer of IntelliServices, Inc., a technology company offering remote electronic medical records services through CareLink solutions. CareLink was one of the very first systems that allowed medical providers to monitor implanted medical devices via the internet. Now owned by Medtronic, the CareLink Network is a widely used remote monitoring service, connecting cardiac device patients to their clinic.

Dr. Richardson’s experience in cardiac remote monitoring innovations creates an exceptional fit for the ReliantHeart Board of Directors. ReliantHeart is a leader in remote monitoring technology with its HeartAssistRemote™ Monitoring system. The HeartAssist 5® Conquest Controller continuously receives data from the VAD which is then transmitted to a secure data center, allowing healthcare providers to monitor patients remotely and provide a proactive response when necessary. The HeartAssist5® is the only remotely monitored VAD in the world. For more information about ReliantHeart, visit http://www.ReliantHeart.com.
