LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) November 15, 2013
Mesothelioma survival rates may be substantially improved through increased use of a certain form of chemotherapy, researchers at the Moffit Cancer Center and Research Institute at the University of South Florida recently announced. Patients undergoing this repeated treatment, according to the researchers, not only live longer but also have a better quality of life.
The announcement was the result of a lengthy study of peritoneal mesothelioma patients between June of 2004 and March of 2012. Researchers reported that those who underwent a second treatment of heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy, or HIPEC, survived more than three times longer than those who had only one round. The findings were recently published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology.
The HIPEC procedure is performed as soon as possible after a surgery in order to reduce the number of tumor cells in a patient. After a tumor has been removed, a solution containing various chemotherapeutic agents is heated to 106 degrees Fahrenheit. This solution is circulated through a patient’s abdominal cavity at a very precise rate for two hours. The treatment has been proven effective at reducing patient discomfort and killing the cancerous cells.
“We are continually encouraged by the commitment and excellence of the bright minds that are working to fight this terrible disease,” said Russell Budd, managing director of mesothelioma law firm Baron & Budd. “We applaud the work of the Moffit Cancer Center researchers, as well as all that of the other professionals who tirelessly work for a cure.”
