In this guitar lesson, now available on YouTube.com, Silvio Gazquez teaches a cool lick from the guitar solo from “Comfortably Numb” from David Gilmour’s band Pink Floyd. TAB’s for this lesson are available at GuitarControl.com.

A “lick” is a sequence of notes from a scale that are used in a section of a solo, by using an array of techniques such as bends, slides, and hammer-on/pull-offs.

In this lead guitar lesson, Silvio demonstrates a really cool lick from David Gilmour. The lick is based in B minor pentatonic first position and starts off by bending the second note on the third string and following with baring the first notes on the first and second strings (this is a very common blues lick). Then it is followed by pulling off the second note to the first note on the second string. Then the second note of the third string is quickly played followed by a Pinch Harmonic of the same note and a small Bend. Directly after, it is followed with a common descending pattern up to the fifth string which includes the Blue Note, the Blue Note is the Diminished fifth (flat 5), in this case it is the eighth fret of the fifth string. And finally it slides down to the fifth fret on the fifth string and then the seventh fret on the sixth string and then back to the fifth fret of the fifth string ending with some tasty Vibrato.

Pink Floyd was founded in 1965 in the UK. Best known for there album Dark Side of the Moon which is still a top selling album to this day. Floyd guitarist David Gilmour is regarded as one of the most influential guitarists of this time. Pink Floyd was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and have sold over 250 million records world wide.

Silvio Gazquez is a native of Argentina and began studying guitar at the age of 14. At age 18 Silvio moved to La Plata to study classical guitar at Bellas Artes University. After three years Silvio left to pursue the electric guitar on his own. In 2004 Gazquez was chosen as a finalist for the Guitar Idol contest, but was not able to make the trip, but was chosen to participate on the Guitar Idol compilation CD. Silvio’s instructional DVD “Virtuoso Guitar Secrets” is available through GuitarControl.com.
