G4S Technology LLC completes Fiber to the Home Network for UC2B in Illinois
Omaha, Nebraska (PRWEB) November 18, 2013 -- G4S Technology, a pioneer in the design and construction of high performance broadband networks and reliable electronic security systems for over 25 years, has completed a fiber to the home project that will greatly enhance the quality of living for over 200 customers in Champaign/Urbana, Illinois. This project was made possible by a $22.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The State of Illinois provided a $3.5 million grant, and local matching funds added an additional $3.4 million to fund the project.
UC2B is an intergovernmental consortium of the University of Illinois and the cities of Urbana and Champaign dedicated to building and operating an open-access, fiber-optic broadband network throughout the Champaign-Urbana area. The foundation of the UC2B network is the fiber-optic “backbone” infrastructure that has been constructed with the grant money. The grant also provided “fiber-to-the-premises” (FTTP) connectivity directly to well over 200 Community Anchor Institutions throughout Champaign, Urbana and Savoy, and to approximately 1,100 households in several underserved neighborhoods in Champaign and Urbana. This direct connectivity will enable improved access/support to health care, educational and recreational institutions, public safety and government agencies, and social service and religious organizations, as well as increased access to public computing centers.
The completed network also provides sustainable adoption and educational outreach programs for vulnerable populations through enhanced educational services and equal educational access for district students. Advanced services enabled by the network include distance learning, video conferencing, high-speed Internet access, telephone voice services, and data services.
