57% of IT leaders felt that 'a centrally managed repository of applications' would be appropriate for distributing SaaS applications to their employees.

A recent survey by industry-leading enterprise app store provider, SaaS Markets (http://www.saasmarkets.com), corroborates Gartner’s prediction that 25% of companies will be deploying their own enterprise app stores by 2017. In fact, the numbers may be much higher than that when focused on larger enterprises, such as Fortune 1000 and 2000 companies, and when factoring in both private app stores for employees and externally-facing app stores for customers.
In SaaS Markets’ November “Cloud Apps in the Enterprise” survey targeted to IT leaders in charge of cloud initiatives for their organizations, just 10% of respondents said they currently have a cloud-based app store for their employees; however, 57% felt that “a centrally managed repository of applications” would be appropriate for distributing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications to their employees. Proprietary cloud-based apps are seemingly on the rise: 63% of companies represented by the survey said that their company uses “proprietary applications specifically designed for their business” in addition to generally available SaaS business apps.
While the opportunity seems ripe for enterprise app stores and/or cloud marketplaces for employees, according to the survey, many of the respondents indicated that their company serves a large base of small and medium-sized business customers (SMBs) and that an external, customer-facing marketplace would also have strategic value in their organization. Specifically, 52% of the survey respondents said their company serves SMBs, and of those, more than half saw the value in a cloud-based business application center for those business customers.
Overall, the data suggests that cloud technology providers looking to effectively compete in the growing enterprise app store market must be well positioned to deliver not only solutions for employees designed to meet the unique security and identity management challenges of large IT organizations, but also an app store platform for business customers who are seeking value-added cloud-based apps and services from a trusted source. This may come as news to technology vendors who previously thought that a one-size-fits-all approach would be sufficient to address market demand.
