Borrego Health is one of 46 health centers in California awarded New Access Point funding by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

This grant will assist Borrego Health to increase access to health care in these rural and underserved communities.

Borrego Community Health Foundation, doing business as (d.b.a) Borrego Health is proposing to open two new clinic sites in Anza and San Jacinto. Both clinics will be initially funded by an $816,667 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The award was obtained in a national grant competition known as New Access Point funding.

The clinics will serve the communities of San Jacinto, Nuevo, Homeland, Anza, Mountain Center and Aguanga in Riverside County. Almost half of these communities are documented by the federal government as Medically Underserved Areas/Populations (MUA/MUPs). In Anza, the nearest hospitals are more than 30 miles away from the proposed clinic sites, and residents must drive on poorly maintained mountain roads to reach needed health care services.

The 2010 U.S. Census Bureau reports that 42% of people in these communities are living at or below 200% of poverty. In the San Jacinto school district, 75% of children qualify for free or reduced lunch, indicating that these children are living at or below 185% of poverty as reported by the California Department of Education. This funding will allow Borrego Health to address these geographical and financial barriers to obtaining needed health care services by providing clinics nearby and improving access to primary and preventive care for all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.

Bruce Hebets, CEO of Borrego Health said, “We are extremely pleased to be awarded this highly competitive funding. This grant will assist Borrego Health to increase access to health care in these rural and underserved communities.”

Borrego Health (http://www.borregomedical.org) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3), public benefit corporation, and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). The organization operates 15 clinic sites, one mobile medical unit, and three mobile dental clinics throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties in California.
