Bitsy Kelley, vp of corporate communications accepts award for Outrigger Hotels and Resorts

In his nomination letter, U.S. Senator for Hawaii, Brian Schatz said: “Outrigger Hotels and Resorts exemplifies the committed leadership we need in Hawaii, both in our vital tourism and hospitality industry, and beyond.”

Outrigger Hotels and Resorts has been named the 2013 Business Leadership Hawaii Leader in Tourism and Hospitality for its international expansion, local strength, Hawaiian and family values. The prestigious award, presented last night by Pacific Business News, highlighted the company’s visionary and bold initiative to expand its operations beyond Hawaii’s shores and “export” its legendary hospitality and trademark exemplary service across the globe.

In his nomination letter, U.S. Senator for Hawaii, Brian Schatz said: “Outrigger Hotels and Resorts exemplifies the committed leadership we need in Hawaii, both in our vital tourism and hospitality industry, and beyond.”

Outrigger has been a trailblazer in the tourism and hospitality industry since founders Roy and Estelle Kelley opened their first hotel in 1947. Together, they provided the footing for a family business that would become the cornerstone of Hawaii’s visitor industry – today boasting 7,900 hotel rooms across 23 Hawaii properties, with 20 percent of Oahu’s hotel rooms under Outrigger management.

Under the direction of president and CEO David Carey, Outrigger Hotels and Resorts has undergone dramatic growth as it expands into Asia and the Pacific. Today the company has 13 international properties and 11,000 rooms worldwide in Guam, Australia, Fiji, Bali, Thailand, China, Vietnam, and most recently, the addition of the Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa, in the Indian Ocean.

“No matter which Outrigger you select around the world, our guests can count on a uniquely authentic cultural guest experience, along with exceptional hospitality, exemplary service and stunning beachfront locations,” said David Carey. “By applying Hawaiian values to our hospitality management, we have been successful in enhancing the guest experience in a positive way.”
In its desire for distinctive property holdings, Outrigger veers away from the “cookie-cutter” approach to design, making each property unique, distinctive, and in harmony with its surroundings; respecting a “sense of place” in order to fit the property to its surrounding environment, as well as to its community. As a result, its properties throughout Hawaii and abroad are not replicas of one another, but instead cover a broad range of styles; from contemporary to traditional, from beach resorts to mountainside views, each fitting into its unique market and with a respect for its natural environment.
