SAE International’s AS-3 Fiber Optics and Applied Photonics Committee is developing a new optical performance monitoring system standard that is capable of detecting, localizing, and isolating impairments as well as assisting in failure prediction of the physical layer of a fiber optic network. This fiber optic Network End-to-End Data Link Evaluation System standard is also known as NEEDLES.
NEEDLES is non-intrusive and non-destructive; it provides a 24/7-condition status of the entire fiber optic network. In real-time it can detect and isolate faults. Because NEEDLES focuses on the physical layer, it can be applied to any fiber optic network including:
- RF over fiber
- Passive Optical Networks
NEEDLES is formally known as AIR6552. For more information about AIR6552 or participation in the development of NEEDLES please contact Bill Woodward, AS-3 chair at wwoodward(at)ursanav(dot)com.
