According to data* from HomeAdvisor, handymen and plumbers receive the highest number of service requests for backed-up and clogged drains during November. The cost of hiring a plumber to repair the garbage disposal and unclog the drain can be hundreds of dollars. HomeAdvisor’s personal finance expert, Leah Ingram, provides tips to homeowners to avoid costly plumbing repairs during the holidays.
“According to HomeAdvisor’s Cost Guide, the average national cost of hiring a plumber is $352,” Ingram said. “Homeowners can prevent these costly repairs by taking a few simple precautions when preparing their holiday meals.”
Ingram offers four tips to avoid holiday plumbing disasters:
- Never throw corn husks, coffee grounds, grease, bones, potato skins, egg shells, or lettuce into the garbage disposal.
- Don’t overload the garbage disposal; throw food waste a little at a time down the drain.
- Always run cold water when throwing items into the disposal.
- Complete the following garbage disposal maintenance every three months: Throw ice down the disposal to sharpen the blades; toss lemon and orange peels down the disposal to prevent odors. Additionally, use a garbage disposer cleaner to degrease the pipes.
