Statistically speaking, the demand for a collaborative and all-inclusive approach to improving college access has never been more critical. According to new Census Bureau numbers, a total of 10.3 million people were enrolled in four-year colleges in 2012, and nearly 6 million were enrolled in two-year colleges.
Unfortunately, the high cost of college, along with a lack of academic preparedness, is causing American students to drop out at alarming rates. According to a new study from Harvard University, only 56% of the students who enter America’s colleges and universities graduate within six years, while only 29% of students who enter two-year programs complete their degrees within three years.
One factor in the higher dropout rates, according to the Harvard study, is the rising cost of a college education. The cost of college has nearly sextupled since 1985, and the total amount of student loan debt held by Americans surpassed $1 trillion in 2011. Another factor in the dropout rate is that students aren’t prepared to face the academic challenges. According to Complete College America—a Washington-based nonprofit aimed at increasing college completion—4 in 10 high school graduates are required to take remedial courses when they start college. Researchers say that remedial numbers have increased from nearly one-third of incoming college freshmen in 2001, to about 40% currently. Furthermore, the ACT indicates only about a third of high school students are college-ready, yet around two-thirds of them are college-bound every year.
The need to academically prepare students for the workload they will eventually face when they reach college is equaled only by the need to prepare students and their parents to face the economic realities of choosing the right college. More than ever, students and parents need to simultaneously know how to finance education, choose the right school, and master the academic skills that will allow them to succeed.
