100 Million Internet Connected Wireless Lights by 2020, Says ON World
San Diego, California (PRWEB) November 20, 2013 -- Wireless LED light bulbs will be one of the fastest growing Internet of Things markets over the next decade, according to global technology research firm ON World.
“Growth of wireless LED light bulbs has been tremendous over the past year even with only a few available products today,” said Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director. “Cloud connected LED lights along with an insatiable demand for smart device apps have created a mass market opportunity for developers.”
ON World’s most recent survey of nearly 300 early technology adopting consumers found that wireless lighting controls is one of the most in demand Smart Home solutions. Nearly 50% indicate that they are “interested” or “most interested” in adopting a smart lighting system. Sixty percent would like their smart lighting system to connect with at least half of their home’s light bulbs.
Year over year growth for wireless light bulbs to date exceeds 250% and several new products are expected to be launched within the next few months. In addition to Philips’ wireless LED lighting solutions, similar products are also currently available or will soon be available by Osram, Samsung, SmartLabs, GreenWave Reality, TCP and Leedarson as well as a growing number of new entrants.
Costs are dropping rapidly. For example, TCP’s recently launched wireless LED light bulbs, enabled by GreenWave Reality's cloud based Smart Home platform, are about 30% less expensive than competing alternatives.
Smart lighting technologies continue to be diverse but ZigBee is emerging as the market leader. Comcast announced it will include ZigBee LED light bulbs as part of its Xfinity Home service. Also, the Connected Lighting Alliance— composed of technology companies and lighting industry giants such as GE, Philips and Osram—has selected ZigBee Light Link as the standard for residential wireless lighting controls. This considerably expands the market potential for interoperable, easy-to-use wireless mesh lighting controls. However, 6LoWPAN based solutions are in the mix and mobile sensing LED light bulbs using Bluetooth Smart are also ramping up such as Twisthink's Vela and Smart Home Lab’s RoboSmart.
By 2020, there will be over 100 million Internet connected wireless light bulbs and lamps worldwide up from 2.4 million this year. The majority will be wireless enabled ballasts and LED drivers at this time.
ON World’s report, "Smart Wireless Lighting," is based on phone interviews and online surveys with over 500 individuals including consumers, facility/property managers, professional installers, equipment manufacturers, software developers and component suppliers. It covers the global market for connected wireless lighting controls in three market landscapes (commercial, residential and municipal) and 14 market segments, presents the results from several surveys and analyzes over 60 companies with smart wireless solutions. Forecasts are for equipment and services as well as by product category, geography and technology. The wireless lighting technologies included are ZigBee, 802.15.4, 6LoWPAN, WiFi, Bluetooth Smart, EnOcean, Z-Wave and others.
