In this guitar lesson, now available on YouTube.com, Silvio Gazquez teaches an easy and cool guitar shredder lick in the key of G Major. TAB’s for this lesson are available at GuitarControl.com.

A “lick” is a sequence of notes from a scale that are used in a section of a solo, by using an array of techniques such as bends, slides, and hammer-on/pull-offs.

In this lead guitar lesson, Silvio demonstrates a really cool and easy guitar shredder lick in the key of G Major. The lick is based in the first position of G Major, using the Ionian Mode.

The Ionian Mode is the first of the 7 Major Modes and was named by Heinrich Glarean in 1547.

Gazquez demonstrates this lick using a technique called Legato. Legato is Italian for “tied together” and in musical terms means that notes are played smoothly and connected with no interval silencing between notes. Legato is achieved on guitar when playing a sequence of notes using hammer on & pull off techniques. Silvio starts the lick on the third fret of the sixth string, G, by picking that note and then doing a hammer on to the 5th and then the 7th fret and then follows with the same sequence, but on the 5th string. Then he does a pull off from the 7th fret to the 3rd fret and then does a hammer on to the 5th and then the 7th fret, which completes the lick, after he repeats the entire lick starting on the 4th string to the 3rd string and then the 2nd string to the first string. This easy lick is great for the beginner because it can be played quickly rather easily.

Silvio Gazquez is a native of Argentina and began studying guitar at the age of 14. At age 18 Silvio moved to La Plata to study classical guitar at Bellas Artes University. After three years Silvio left to pursue the electric guitar on his own. In 2004 Gazquez was chosen as a finalist for the Guitar Idol contest, but was not able to make the trip, but was chosen to participate on the Guitar Idol compilation CD. Silvio’s instructional DVD “Virtuoso Guitar Secrets” is available through GuitarControl.com.
