“Having access to a surgery center such as ours allows for women to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy and begin breast reconstruction immediately,” said Hartog.

As more women proactively choose to get tested for the BRCA 1 or 2 mutations, with many who test positive choosing a pre-emptive mastectomy, more surgeons are helping to fill that difficult void for women.
Dr. Jeffrey Hartog, director of the Breast Center at the Bougainvillea Clinique, is one such plastic surgeon looking to help women proactively fight breast cancer through pre-emptive mastectomies and subsequent breast reconstruction.
He established the Aesthetic Surgery Center of Winter Park, which is directly adjacent to the Bougainvillea Clinique. The Aesthetic Surgery Center of Winter Park is a state-licensed and Medicare-certified ambulatory surgery center, which means it is not an office surgery facility.
The Aesthetic Surgery Center of Winter Park is licensed by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, the same authority that licenses hospitals.
“Having access to a surgery center such as ours allows for women to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy and begin breast reconstruction immediately,” said Hartog. “Many women don’t know that this option is available to them, nor do they know their breast reconstruction options.”
Hartog specializes in a technique known as the autologous fat transfer procedure, which gently takes fat from one area of the body and inserts it in small droplets into the breast. The virtually scar-less and natural procedure gives women natural-looking and -feeling breasts, and these women often regain breast sensation.
“The prophylactic mastectomy is best for the women who test positive for the mutation and haven’t yet been diagnosed with breast cancer,” Hartog said. “One of the benefits of the adjacent surgery center is that it allows women to have a mastectomy and leave the same day with small breasts. Another benefit is that it cuts down the costs for the patient and the surgeons.”
Women who test positive for the BRCA 1 or 2 mutations do not need a radiologist or to undergo pathology when opting for the pre-emptive surgery.
Hartog, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, has presented on breast reconstruction with fat nationally and internationally. He is also a speaker at the 11th annual meeting of the International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science (IFATS) in New York where he is speaking about fat grafting.
Located in central Florida, the Breast Center at the Bougainvillea Clinique is the premier destination for people seeking the best in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the breast. Jeffrey M. Hartog, M.D., and his wife, Michelle Hartog, R.N., established these facilities with the goal of improving people’s quality of life through state-of-the-art plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures. The practice is adjacent to the Aesthetic Surgery Center of Winter Park – a free-standing state- and federally licensed surgical center that caters to all client needs.
