Tresys Technology Announces Availability of New Product Tresys MobileFortress™

In today’s fast moving world, mobile security is a necessary feature needed to protect the data and networks of users in both Government and Commercial spaces alike. A recent Juniper Research study shows that despite the ever increasing threat profile, less than 1 in 20 smartphones and tablets have third party security software installed on them. Over 250,000 users have been affected by Android malware – with a 400% increase in 6 months from June 2010 to January 2011 alone. With Android holding 68.8% of the global smartphone operating system market (per IDC), securing Android handsets and tablets are a critical focus for commercial, government, and critical infrastructure entities. Tresys MobileFortress is a secure version of Android directly designed to assist organizations with mitigating the varying security risks associated within the mobile environment such as spoofing, repackaging and grafted applications, greyware, and rooting.
Since 2011, Tresys has worked with the open source software (OSS) community to integrate security controls into Android, a project now known as Secure Enhancements (SE) for Android. Google™ has enabled the use of SE for Android in v4.3 of the Android operating system. However, the controls are not utilized by default and no security policy is enforced. Tresys MobileFortress makes use of these controls and includes other security features that provide administrators the ability to lock down various features of the device, restrict network access and hardware components, and control applications – all in an easy to use and customizable manner.
Tresys MobileFortress allows administrators to specify which applications are placed in select security containers while restricting or granting access to capabilities on the device. Administrators can also require that all traffic from the device must traverse the enterprise’s VPN, or limit which applications can access the VPN (e.g., protecting corporate email). Unlike competing solutions, applications do not have to be binary modified to make use of the security controls.
Tresys MobileFortress is very flexible. It allows the security controls to be configured to meet a wide variety of use cases – from government to commercial implementations. It has been designed to target the NSA’s Commercial Security for Classified (CSfC) Mobility Capability Package (MCP) and various Mobility Protection Profiles. And it is also designed for use in industrial control applications, allowing secure use of tablets and other devices for monitoring and control of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) environments.
