Air Pollution, Low Humidity Harmful to Eye Surface Health Reports Ophthalmology Professor
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) November 20, 2013 -- According to Ophthalmology professor John Ng, MD, humans depend upon a healthy environment for optimal health. Degradation of the environment, including dehumidification of the air due to decreased ambient water vapor pressure and/or increased particulate pollution, can negatively impact human health. Common health symptoms resulting from dry and polluted air include dry eyes, irritated nasal and oral passageways, headaches and lethargy. Dr. Ng presented these findings in a report for the Sharon Kleyne Study Team on Health and the Atmospheric Environment.
The Study Team’s objective, according to Kleyne and Ng, is research and education regarding the influence on human health of changes in atmospheric water vapor content. The Study Team’s intent is to stimulate discussions of the effects of climatic variation with the goal of bringing together multiple professional disciplines to improve the ability of humans to live with and adapt to a changing and increasingly dehydrating atmosphere.
John Ng, MD, is a professor of Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Opthalmic Facial Plastic Surgery at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, OR. Ng received his MD degree from George Washington University and has extensive career experience in military ophthalmology and eye reconstruction. .

Air filters can help remove airborne particulate pollution from our homes and work places. But some of these particles may also affect humidity, ozone levels and weather patterns.
