Center for Hispanic Leadership to Award $50,000 in Scholarships for Online Leadership Education Campaign to Launch at December 2nd Hispanics in Healthcare Forum
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 20, 2013 -- With the number of Hispanic students enrolling in college on the rise but the need to ensure that college seniors, graduate students and Hispanic professional graduate pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the Center for Hispanic Leadership in conjunction with the formation of its National STEM Leadership Council announced today the organization would award $50,000 in scholarships to Hispanic students and professionals to get certified through CHL’s Hispanic Leadership Academy (HLA).
The HLA “Our Culture Matters!” Scholarship Program will launch at CHL’s December 2nd forum, Strengthening the Hispanic Pipeline in Healthcare and Biomedical Fields at City of Hope in Duarte, California and be featured on CHL’s new preventive care platform for Hispanics, HealthyHispanicLiving.com.
According to CHL’s recent survey findings of Hispanic professionals across the country, Hispanics are only delivering 40% of their potential full at work, which will continue to perpetuate the United States’ declining global competitive edge. “Today’s Hispanics are at a crossroads,” says Glenn Llopis, CHL CEO/Founder, “by assimilating at school and in the workplace we are losing what makes us unique to compete. Hispanics must embrace their cultural values and heritage and leverage them to their fullest potential – only then will the numbers – 55 million – match the influence.”
Given the current healthcare reform as well as the growing number of Hispanics in this country, there is a clear need for in STEM careers especially healthcare for two major reasons: 1) professional healthcare is not necessarily something Hispanics were raised with or see the value in, and therefore they may not seek it out; and 2) the urgency is greater in this industry because the lack of research and outreach to the community directly affects their health and well-being. “From family to physician and from research to cures, Hispanics need to play a more meaningful and purposeful role in the healthcare industry as well as other industries,” explains Marisa Salcines, Editor-in-Chief of HealthyHispanicLiving.com. “They need to help the industry become more Hispanic friendly on many levels by acknowledging, the growing importance of culture and the role it plays in serving patients; the need to be Spanish-language mindful to elevate trust and an overall better experience of care; the demand for new treatment and cures.”
Representing 16.2% of the U.S. population (55 MM people), these are the current Hispanic tension points that need to be addressed:
• Lack of targeted healthcare information for Hispanics
• Not enough outreach from the medical to the Hispanic community
• Hispanics have a higher risk of preventable disease, injury, and death
• Low vaccination rates contributing to preventable diseases in Hispanics
• Hispanics need to receive health information in a more timely manner
• The obesity epidemic hit the Hispanic population fast and hard
Add Llopis, “For these tension points as well as CHL’s recent research findings, the organization is offering Hispanics the opportunity to earn a scholarship to obtain culturally-relevant training that will awaken their Latino factor and enable them to become what the country needs most – 21st century leaders.
To earn a HLA “Our Culture Matters” Scholarship, applicants need to be a Hispanic college senior, graduate student, or professional and submit an essay (500 word minimum) that answers the following questions:
• What makes you unique?
• How have your cultural values influenced your dreams, goals, and ambitions?
In addition to earning the opportunity to receive 6-month access to CHL’s HLA, winners and their essays will be featured on HealthyHispanicLiving. Says Salcines, “It’s a great stepping stone towards graduate school, landing a job, advancing your career, and/or adding to your resume!”
