Legal Aid of Orange County helped over 17,000 people who were in dire need of legal services...

The Legal Aid Society of Orange County, Florida held its 6th annual Breakfast of Champions in downtown Orlando on November 7th, 2013. The event has a tradition of organizing and providing free legal services to the “working poor, elderly, and abused and neglected children in our community”, according to the Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers website.

The breakfast was attended by over 560 lawyers this year, and included many dignitaries and local judges. Attendees gathered at the fundraising event at 7:30 am, which was located at the Presidential Ballroom at Church Street Station.

The event began with the Honorable Chief judge Belvin Perry giving a moving speech, encouraging lawyers to continue the rich tradition of performing pro bono service for the poor. Judge Perry's speech was “remarkable”, according to criminal defense and personal injury lawyer William Umansky in central Florida, and “caused many of the lawyers in the audience to reflect on how much legal aid does for the poor in Orlando”.

William Umansky, founder of The Umansky Law Firm, provides pro bono service along with all of the lawyers in his firm. The Umansky Law Firm financially contributes the Legal Aid Society because of the strong belief that the Legal Aid Society does extraordinary work for the Orange County citizens who cannot afford legal representation.

After Perry’s speech, three clients of the Legal Aid Society gave a recounting of their experiences and how legal aid helped them save their homes, get badly needed benefits, and provided emotional support.

Partner William Umansky and former trustee of the board of the Legal Aid Society summed it up best when he said "we are proud to give our time and financial resources to such a great organization. Legal Aid of Orange County helped over 17,000 people who were in dire need of legal services in areas of loan modification, disability benefits, immigration and many other areas of law. It is the best legal aid organization in the country"
