New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Welcomes New System That Warns about Food Poisoning
New York, N.Y (PRWEB) November 27, 2013 -- Researchers at the University of Rochester have come up with a new system called nEmesis that can inform the public if they are likely to become ill after visiting a specific restaurant. According to a recent report released by the university, the new system can provide this information by listening to tweets from other restaurant patrons.
Based on the report, the researchers, over a four-month period, collected 3.8 million tweets from more than 94,000 unique users in New York City, traced 23,000 restaurant visitors, and found 480 reports of likely food poisoning. They also found that the data they collected correlated with the public inspection data provided by the local health department.
In this era of social networking, these are excellent tools for consumers, says New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "Food poisoning can cause individuals to become seriously ill. This new system provides valuable information that will help people avoid food-borne illnesses and better select a New York restaurant."
Food poisoning is often caused by the negligence of food producers, processors and even servers, Wilhelm says. "When you become sick as a result of consuming contaminated food, it is important to remember that you have legal rights. Victims in such cases can seek compensation for damages from the at-fault parties for medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization and past and future pain and suffering."
Wilhelm offers several tips to avoid food poisoning, whether you are are eating out in New York City or while traveling:
• As far as possible, avoid foods that are riskier than others such as raw or undercooked meats, seafood, raw and unpeeled produce.
• Avoid food on buffets and pick food that is freshly cooked or hot.
• Make sure you wash your hands with antibacterial soap before you eat your meal.
• Smell your food and avoid eating if it doesn't smell right.
• Order the popular items on the menu since it is more likely, due to the turnover, that they are freshly prepared.
• Ask to see the kitchen where the food is being prepared.
