TerViva, a start-up based in Oakland, California, is changing the face of agriculture and aims to diversify and sustain the world’s agriculture one crop at a time. Working within the $121B biofuels market, TerViva is taking its first stab at commercial-level agriculture with its new legume crop, Pongamia.

Pongamia is a hardy plant that is able to withstand harsh conditions such as soil salinity and low water levels, which would be impossible for other plants. With 20 times as many gallons per acre than corn, Pongamia can drop-in to existing agricultural infrastructure and provides biofuel and protein-rich seedcake that may be used for animal feed. Not to mention, Pongamia grows on land that does not compete for food.

As the world’s food and supply demand increases while farmland is reduced, a solution for land deemed “unusable farmland” must be found. TerViva is well on its way to doing just that. The key to sustainable agriculture is bringing more biodiversity to already existing infrastructure, according to TerViva. With just 7 crops dominating the U.S. agriculture scene, TerViva wants to encourage a variety of species.

Working with some big partners, including US Sugar Corp and Mosaic, some of ag’s biggest leaders are firm believers of TerViva’s work and potential. Just recently, TerViva signed with one of the largest agriculture operators in the country to produce Pongamia on 10,000 acres.

And with TerViva’s team credentials, it’s no wonder they’re grabbing the attention of some of the largest ag companies in the U.S. TerViva’s cofounders and investors include Joseph Andrew, former Chairman of the Democratic National Party, his wife Ann Slaughter Andrew an environmental attorney and the former Ambassador to Costa Rica, and CEO Naveen Sikka who served on the steering committee for Cleantech for Obama. TerViva has also been featured in numerous biofuels trade publications, and more recently featured in CNN Money and VentureBeat.
