It's been the site of some of the worst accidents in Orlando, and the changes were badly needed.

Last month marked the completion of a $3.6 million makeover for Semoran Boulevard, one of the city's main arteries. While the changes make the thoroughfare prettier, Orlando car accident attorney Michael Steinger says they also make it much safer.

The project began last year and includes wider sidewalks and nicer landscaping, according to the Orlando Sentinel (10.23.2013). Medians in the boulevard now have brick curbs and pavers and are planted with oleanders, crape myrtles and other flowering trees and shrubs.

But Steinger says the most important changes are those that directly affect safety.

“This is a six-lane road that brings heavy traffic in and out of the city,” said Steinger, a founding partner of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene law firm. “It's been the site of some of the worst accidents in Orlando, and the changes were badly needed.”

In particular Steinger noted the upgrades that make the street more pedestrian friendly, such as eight-foot sidewalks and wheelchair accessibility.

“Our city unfortunately has some of the highest car accident rates in the country,” Steinger said. “We have a particularly high rate of cars hitting pedestrians, and these measures will help prevent that.”

Steinger said that other features, such as textured crosswalks that remind drivers to slow down and brighter LED street lamps, will also improve safety.

“This is one of those times when I'm proud to live in Orlando,” Steinger said. “Our city saw a problem area, a street that looked bad and cost people their lives. And we fixed it.”
