A Fish a Day to Keep the Cancer Doctor Away?
Sturgeon Bay, WI (PRWEB) November 26, 2013 -- Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, responsible for 23% of all cancer cases and 14% of all cancer deaths in 2008. Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin Chiropractor and Naturopath Dr. J G Moellendorf, DC, ND, LCP relates that while the initial cause of breast cancer is unknown, research suggests that there is a high correlation with dietary habits, especially the types of fat eaten.
A research team led by Duo Li at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China reviewed 26 publications covering 21 independent research studies monitoring women for the development of breast cancer from 4.3 to 20 years. The studies included 20,905 cases of breast cancer among 883,585 individuals up through December 2012. They published their findings in the June 2013 British Medical Journal titled “Intake of fish and marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and risk of breast cancer: meta-analysis of data from 21 independent prospective cohort studies.”
Comparisons of decreased breast cancer risk were done between each of the omega-3 fatty acids along with total fish intake. The risk of developing breast cancer was reduced by as much as 14% in those taking an omega-3 fish based fatty acid supplement, whether eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), or docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). The breast cancer risk was reduced by 5% for each 0.1 gram of omega-3s consumed daily. On the other hand, there was no meaningful decrease in breast cancer risk in those taking an alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) supplement or increasing their consumption of fish.
The researchers conclude that their findings have implications for preventing breast cancer by means of dietary and lifestyle interventions.
David W L Ma’s research team at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada found similar results when testing a novel strain of mice. A specially bred type of mice known as fat-1, are able to convert omega-6 fatty acids into omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6s are very inflammatory in the body, which can lead to many diseases including cancer. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties in the body, and have been shown to reduce the development of cancer. The researchers crossbred fat-1 mice with mouse mammary tumor virus mice (MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5), which are used as a model to test aggressive breast cancer. The results in the crossbred fat-1/MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5 mice and the MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5 mice with a high omega-3 diet were virtually the same: a 30% reduction in tumor size and a 33% reduction in the number of cancer tumors developed. The results were published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry February 2013 titled “Mammary tumor development is directly inhibited by lifelong n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.”
The sixth most common cancer is squamous-cell carcinoma of the mouth. “Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids selectively inhibit growth in neoplastic oral keratinocytes by differentially activating ERK1/2” was published in Carcinogenesis, July 2013. Researchers at the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, England led by Eric Kenneth Parkinson found that the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA cause death in both pre-malignant and malignant cancer cells while having no bad effects on normal cells. They concluded that omega-3 rich foods can assist in the prevention and treatment of oral and skin cancers.
The conclusion of these recent research papers is that a quality fish oil supplement containing at least 300 milligrams each of EPA and DHA of marine based omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the incidence of breast cancer by 14 to 33 per cent and may be beneficial in preventing and treating squamous cell cancers of the mouth and skin. Supplementing with alpha-linolenic acid such as flax seed oil, or eating more cold water fatty fish such as salmon, has not been shown to have these same benefits in reducing the risk of developing cancer.
