High accuracy, photorealistic 3D Scanning for a few hundred dollars.

Robocular LLC opened its series of home 3D Scanners on Kickstarter for pledging today. The scanners feature full color and full texture one-click 3D scanning, with sub-millimeter resolutions, and are available starting at 499$. The scanners can be found at this link.
A 3D scanner is a device capable of taking any object in your room and turning it into a 3D model representation on your computer. You simply open the box, put the item in it, and a couple of minutes later, you'll get a full 3D model on your computer. The 3D model can then be stored for later use, modified and 3D printed, or even turned into a mold. 3D models can also be used in games, or by engineering software. They can be used by sculptors or artists, or just people who want to keep a virtual copy of their belongings. They can also be shared with buyers who want to verify the quality of an item with the seller. Instead of spending hours modeling an item it can now be done in a minute.
The Robocular 3D Scanner markets itself as a "3D Scanner for everyone" and that is exactly the goal that it sets out to do. The scanners are designed to be extremely user friendly, only requiring the user to put their target object in the box and hit a button to get crisp 3D models. They are also meant to disrupt and expand the 3D scanning market that is currently significantly lagging behind in terms of cost and performance, by choosing to provide low costs without sacrificing image quality.
The design of the Robocular 3D Scanner stemmed from the lack of availability of low-cost 3D Scanners with high quality components. Most of the high quality scanners cost several thousand dollars while the less expensive ones tend to compensate by using low quality components. Robocular addresses all of these points, using green high quality lasers instead of the lower quality red lasers, high resolution cameras, high precision turntables with more than 5x the resolution of most competitors. Those components are typically available in devices that cost upwards of 10,000$.
The device is capable of capturing the same information as 4,000 high quality pictures in a single scan and incorporate them into a colored model.
The model is being offered in a mini size which has a scanning volume of 7" diameter and 7" height and is capable of capturing objects of moderate complexity, and a standard size with a volume of 9" diameter and 9" height which can capture the most complex of shapes thanks to its high resolution mobile laser and mobile camera.
The device comes equipped with one of the most feature-rich software interfaces, allowing several operations on the scanned models including mold-making, simplification, merging, cutting and several other modifications.
Robocular LLC has provided several sample scans both in raw format and in mesh format, as well as detailed technical specifications and scenarios.
