Wild Animals Celebrate Thanksgiving This Weekend with Turkey Dinners and More
Naples, FL (PRWEB) November 27, 2013 -- After you finish your Thanksgiving dinner and navigate the sales, spend some relaxing time with friends and family in the historic gardens enjoying the rare wildlife feasting on their turkey dinners and other festive treats. Tigers, alligators, hyenas, leopards, and other meat lovers will enjoy fresh turkey leg dinners. For the less predatory creatures like the lesser apes and macaws, keepers and volunteers are preparing turkey-shaped crafts to be filled with the animals’ favorite treats. Turkey Day at the Zoo is being celebrated all weekend long from Friday, November 29 and all the way through Sunday, December 1. (Naples Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving Day.)
Activities like this are part of the daily animal enrichment program. Proper animal husbandry includes not only thorough cleaning, nutritional diets, veterinary care, and daily record keeping, but also behavioral enrichment. Enrichment begins with exhibit design, number and variety of animals living together, and also includes toys for the animal to play with (or destroy), feeding protocols, supplemental foraging activities, and even the use of scents to increase curiosity about objects. By rotating activities, animals consistently engage in something new, fun, and thought provoking.
